The Gospel of Luke: Chapter 1

main image
Today we begin a three week journey through the gospel of Luke. Luke will include some details that are not found in the other gospel accounts. The first chapter is full of details surrounding the birth of John the Baptist and Jesus. It had been 4 hundred years since the last prophet had come to Israel. Heaven had been silent for 4 centuries until suddenly an angel is dispatched from heaven to the temple in Jerusalem with great news. A child was about to be conceived that would be the forerunner of The Messiah.
Six months later, that same angel was sent to Nazareth to tell a young virgin that she was about to conceive and bring forth the Messiah that had been promised for thousands of years. This first chapter records the birth of John and the prophesies of Zacharias and Mary. Luke sets the stage for the birth of Jesus, His ministry, death and resurrection. May this gospel account speak to our hearts these next three weeks.

Wisdom for the Ages: Ecclesiastes 11

Solomon came to understand that man knows very little about how God works. In chapter 11 he begins to encourage those who would read and hear these words to “ cast their bread upon the waters” and it will return to you. This speaks of being generous toward others and having faith to sow into the lives of others.
Solomon reminds us that the mysteries of God are often hidden from man. Man cannot answer how a child is formed in a mother’s womb; nor how a day will turn out. He cautions young people to be careful not to follow your heart or desire what the eyes behold because God will judge us for living that way. He ends this chapter by encouraging people to remove evil from our flesh for this leads to vanity.  These words of wisdom come from God. We would be wise and blessed to obey them.
